The educational project "EnerGenious" is the initial stage of the RNC of the WPC programme "Energy League", designed to facilitate the involvement of talented and enterprising young people in the industry, to help their professional training and career development. The programme is organised by the Russian National Committee of the World Petroleum Council with the support of the authorities of St. Petersburg and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra, St. Petersburg Mining University, Gubkin University, the International Competence Centre for Mining-Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO and oil and gas companies. The educational project “EnerGenious” includes two events: Winter school and Case marathon.

“EnerGenious” Winter School

The Winter School is an intensive introductory course for school students of 9-11th grade, which allows high school students to get not only theoretical knowledge about oil and gas industry, but also to get acquainted with the organisation of production processes in practice. Authoritative specialists of the oil and gas industry from different countries of the world are invited to give lectures at the winter school "EnerGenious".

In 2020, RNC of the WPC organised two cycles of the winter school: in Nizhnevartovsk, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra (17-21 February) and in Stavanger, Norway (2-6 March).

In 2021 Winter school “EnerGenious” is included in the programme of IV International Youth Forum of Applied Research “Oil Capital” (Khanty-Mansiysk, KhMAO-Ugra). Study period: 22-26 March.

“EnerGenious” Case Marathon

Case marathon is held in the format of a business game, combined with online training. All participants are divided into several teams, consisting of 5-6 participants. In the course of the business game each team offers its own option of implementing a common project. Tasks of the programme are similar to the tasks that are solved by specialists in the real environment in accordance with the methodology of the leading companies in the industry. Each team is assigned mentors who advise the participants, draw analogies with real projects, assess team performance, and are in constant contact with their mentees.

The remote part of the case marathon is divided into three phases (Assess, Select, Define), similar to the phases of a large offshore field development project that is being implemented in reality. At the end of each stage, the reports of the work performed are presented, and the jury makes estimates.

During the final on site stage corresponding to the Execute phase, each team build a maquette of the facility, considering time and budget limits, seeking to achieve or even improve the targets defined during the distance working period.

The first case marathon started on April 25, 2020 and lasted three months. The final stage of the case marathon took place in St. Petersburg, at the site of the Mining University.

The victory was won by "Duker" team consisting of Yulia Babak and Ekaterina Shalyakina from Nizhnevartovsk, Maria Vasileva from St. Petersburg. All high school students who participated in the “EnerGenious” case marathon received preferences for admission to the Russian State University of Oil and Gas or the St. Petersburg Mining University. Members of the winning team received more significant advantages for admission to these universities. Maria Vasileva won the individual competition. She won an educational grant – the main prize of the RNC of the WPC case-marathon.

Second case-marathon started on November 26, 2020. The final stage and award ceremony will take place on March 25, 2021 in Khanty-Mansiysk, at the site of the International Forum "Oil Capital".

Second case-marathon started on November 26, 2020. About 150 high school and undergraduate students from half a dozen regions of Russia and neighbouring countries took part in this large-scale educational project. All of them went through a preliminary competitive selection process.

In this cycle, participants were offered three project areas to choose from: "Offshore oil and gas field development" (curated by Gazprom Neft), "Hydrocarbon cycling in household and industry" (SIBUR) and "Creating a hydrocarbon field development concept" (Mining University).

The final stage of the case marathon was held in Khanty-Mansiysk, on the site of the IV International Youth Applied Research Forum "Oil Capital". The teams presented the results of their work here. Among the winners were schoolchildren from six towns of Ugra, students from Vladivostok, St. Petersburg. Nizhnevartovsk, Ufa, and representatives of five Moscow universities.

Third cycle of the “EnerGenious” started on November 24, 2021.

This year participants of the case marathon were offered a choice of five case studies developed by RNC WPC together with leading Russian companies and universities in the oil and gas industry:

• Offshore oil field development (Gazprom Neft);
• Digital age, or who are they, Homo digital? (Lukoil Perm);
• Creation of a hydrocarbon field development concept (Saint Petersburg Mining University);
• Optimising production processes of oil and gas transportation (Gubkin University).

Rimera Group prepared different programmes for schoolchildren and students. Improving ESP manufacturing technology (for students); Creating a business development strategy for an oilfield service provider (for schoolchildren).

The final project presentations and awarding ceremony will be held in spring 2022 in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra at the venue of the V International Youth Applied Research Forum “Oil Capital”. There will also be a winter school for the marathon participants, organised by RNC WPC.
